Firefighter Survival Training
By East Concord Fire Department
Wednesday May 14, 2025
Monday night, East Concord and Chaffee Sardinia Firefighters had the opportunity to train with Erie County fire instructors on some firefighter survival skills. While we hope that we never have to use these skills in a real life scenario, it is always important to train in the event of a disaster.
Some of the skills we practiced were wall breaching, which could be used to move from room to room to escape bad fire conditions. Confined space, in the event of having to go through tight spaces to get out. Crawling over floor joists, if the floor ever gives out. Head first ladder bailout, if the firefighter needs to escape in a hurry from a 2nd floor window and basement window self rescue if a firefighter becomes trapped in a basement. The purpose of this training was to train ourselves so that we can fit through small spaces, even with all of our gear on as well as teaching us to remain calm in difficult conditions.
Thank you to the East Concord Fire Department for the invitation! Also, thank you to Erie County Fire Safety and County Fire Instructors Gorczyca and Zacher for delivering the Firefighter Survival program for us!
