Fire Officer "Boot Camp" Training
By Assistant Chief Roblee
Wednesday January 28, 2026
In between bursts of cold and snow, Assistant Chiefs Siminski and Roblee delivered a three night presentation on the duties of a fire officer and operational decision making. Topics covered included non-emergency roles, leadership, incident command system, size up and operational considerations for incident commanders.
The program was designed to bridge the gap between basic trained firefighters and line officers. Non-emergency concepts from the Fire Officer I course were covered in night 1, while operational decision making was covered in nights 2 and 3. All firefighters need to understand how decisions are made on the fireground so they can understand their role. This prepares firefighters and company level officers to lead an incident scene in the absence of chief officers.
Throughout the program, members were given scenario based exercises to apply what they learned. Those exercises allowed members to practice conflict resolution, health and safety leadership, implementation of the Incident Command System, sizing up an incident scene and calculating fire flow.
Members of all experience levels participated in open dialogue, including our longest and shortest tenured members! The mix of experience and engagement significantly contributed to the value of the program.
