What is a Dry Hydrant?

After completing equipment checks last night, a crew tested a dry hydrant on Genesee Road. Dry hydrants are the primary source of firefighting water in many rural communities. They are simply a pipe connected to a body of water, such as a pond or creek. Fire engines can connect to the above ground end of the pipe and pull water from the pond or creek.
Since there is not a town wide municipal water service with pressurized fire hydrants, dry hydrants are critical to firefighting operations in the Town of Sardinia. There are 13 operational dry hydrants spread out across the town. Each dry hydrant site was installed in cooperation with the landowner. We appreciate the landowners' willingness to work with us to provide firefighting water to the town.
We are always looking for more dry hydrant locations, especially on the south end of town where water is difficult to access. Engineering and installation of the dry hydrant site is provided by the fire company. If you would be willing to discuss installation of a dry hydrant at your pond or creek, please email us at mailbox@sardiniafire.org. We will provide more information regarding installation and access requirements. More available water greatly reduces the strain on emergency operations!
